Spring Fling dates set

The official Spring Fling week will at Southern this year will be Monday, April 29 through and including Friday, May 3, according to Val Carlisle, Student Services. The picnic will be held on the front campus oval from 10:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Friday, May 3. All faculty/staff and students are encouraged to take part.

Pajama Game continues

The Southern Theatre and the Music Department presententation of Abbott and Bissell's musical comedy, Pajama Game, at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Feb 22 and Saturday, Feb. 23 in Taylor Performing Arts Center. Alex Pinkston, Theatre, directs the show. Bud Clark, Music, is musical director and Gerrie-Ellen Johnston, Theatre, is choreographer. This Tony Award-winning show produced the hit songs Hey There, You with the Stars in Your Eyes, Hernando's Hideaway. Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for senior citizens, high school and students from other colleges, $3 for a group of 15 or more or MSSC faculty/staff and $2 for MSSC students with I.D.

Today's Technology Brown Bag

Jeff Martinek, English, will speak on the subject of Powerpoint and Blackboard
Enhanced Televised Classes at today's Technology Brown Bag. The Brown Bag will take place in Room 310, House of Lords Room of the Billingsly Student Center from 12:10 to 12:50. Betsy Griffin, Academic Affairs, says those wanting to attend should go to the third floor of the BSC, obtain their free lunches and enjoy this informative session. The Brown Bags are open to all faculty and staff.

Attention: Contemporary Foreign Film Fans

The featured film for tonight, Friday, Feb. 22, is the 1998 Danish "Dogma 95" film, The Celebration, directed by Thomas Vinterberg. Nick Kyle, Art. says the celebrated film will be shown at 7 p.m.in Room 105, Webster Hall. Facets says that the film, centering on an affluent family's weekend reunion, "veers between being the bleakest of tragedies and the most astonishing of black comedies." Technically, the film reflects Dogma's dictates: no artificial lighting, sets or props, lots of hand-held camerawork, naturalistic sound, all shot on digital video before being transferred to film. Roger Ebert wrote: "Imagine Eugene O'Neill and Woody Allen collaborating on a screenplay about a family reunion. Now let Luis Bunuel direct it."

Health Fair promotes healthly lifestyles & more

The Wellness Office will sponsor this year's Health Fair on Feb. 26, 27 and 28th. The event will be held each day from 7-10 a.m.on the 3rd Floor, Billingsly Student Center. The purpose is to pomote the awareness of healthy lifestyles, early detection of disease and preventive care options. Donna O'Keefe, Wellness Director, says the screenings are not intended to be used for diagnostic purposes but to identify areas, if any, appropriate for you to follow up with your personal physician. Blood work and hemoccult (colon cancer screens) are available at no charge to faculty/staff. Tests available for an additional cost include PSA screening for prostate cancer, thyroid screening, complete blood counts and urinalysis.

Thinking about financial aid?

Cheryl Dobson, Financial Aid, says students interested in applying for summer financial should stop by the Financial Aid Office as of March 1. She says Pell Grants are not available for the summer semester and it does not appear SEOG or Perkins loan funds will be available for summer applicants. Students must enroll in at least three credit hours to apply for aid. (Intersession classes do not qualify for aid). She says those wanting financial aid for the 2002-2003 academic year should apply as soon as 2001 tax returns are completed. The "Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)" should be applied for on line at www.fafsa.ed.gov. To be considered for Missouri state aid, the FAFSA must be received by the Department of Education no later than April 1. To hold fees, results must be received here no later than July 1.

MSSC Model U.N. Club in St. Louis

Model United Nations Club participated in the Midwest Model United Nations, Feb. 13-16 in St. Louis. MSSC joined about 40 other colleges & universities in playing the roles of approximately 50 UN members states. MSSC represented Pakistan.Ben Rigdon, senior History major from Neosho, was recognized as one of five outstanding delegates on the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). Jamie Vann, junior undecided major from Oronogo, served as Head Delegate. Katherine Carlson, senior Sociology/International Studies major from California, Mo., and Steve Harrison, junior International Communications/French major from Carl Junction, represented the General Assembly 1st Committee. Sharon Lukunka, junior Speech Communications major from Zambia, represented the General Assembly 2nd Committee. Jamie Vann represented the General Assembly 3rd Committee. Michelle Sparks, sophomore,undecided major from Lockwood, represented the General Assembly 4th Committee. Missouri Southern faculty members, William Kumbier and Paul Teverow, serve as advisers for the delegation.

Support Center helps with eating disorders

If you are concerned that you may have developed an eating disorder or know of a friend who may be in trouble, you can complete a confidential screening on-line and get immediate feedback. Warning signs include:
  • A marked increase or decrease in weight not related to a medical condition;
  • Severe dieting, preference for strange foods;
  • Withdrawn or ritualized behavior at Secretive binging;
  • An intense preoccupation with weight and body image;
  • Compulsive or excessive exercising;
  • Self-induced vomiting, periods of fasting, or laxative, diet pill, diuretic abuse;
  • Feelings of isolation, depression, or irritability.

Alumni to exhibit paintings in Spiva Gallery

Two Missouri Southern alumni will exhibit paintings in the Spiva Art Gallery of MSSC through March 8. Perry Fleming will exhibit oil paintings which he describes as "more objects than paintings." He received a BSE degree in Art Education from Missouri Southern in 1990. He currently is the general manager of the Keyes Art Gallery in Springfield. Mr. Fleming has exhibited his work widely and, last year, had a show in the Regional Gallery of the George A. Spiva Center for the Arts in downtown Joplin. Daniel Scott will exhibit encaustic paintings. The encaustic process is an ancient paint medium involving wax as a vehicle and binder. He received a BSE degree in Art Education from Missouri Southern in 1997 and a M.Ed. degree in Art Education from the University of Missouri-Columbia last year. He currently is a candidate for an MFA degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia. Mr. Scott has exhibited his work in Columbia, St. Louis and Kansas City. Last year, he was accepted for a juried group show, Millennium Bug, at the Kansas City Artists Coalition. Regular gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. There is no admission fee. Marketing Club wins at Conference

Delta Epsilon Chi, the Marketing Club at Missouri Southern, recently attended the 2002 State Career Development Conference at Lake of the Ozarks. Six of the eight memebers attending placed in the top three of their categories and qualified to take part in national competitions in Salt Lake City in April. John Daigle, Joplin, club president, and Rodney Hobart, Neosho, placed first in the Team Event for Business to Business Marketing. Club vice president Desiree Bridges, Neosho, and Sylvia Wofford, Joplin, placed second for the Sports and Entertainment Marketing team event. Casey Boyd, club secretary-treasurer, Carthage, placed first for E-Commerce Decision Making and Danielle Dudley of Carthage placed third for Management Decision-Making and Merchandising. Faculty/staff are invited to support the chapter by becoming a sponsor for any member(s) to help fund their trip to Salt Lake City. FACULTY/STAFF NOTES

Catherine Cole, Nursing, says a group of six nursing students and two faculty are traveling to Jefferson City Feb. 18 the 16th Annual Nurse Advocacy Day, sponsored by the Missouri Nurses Association (MONA).

Catherine Cole, Nursing, reports that a Blood Drive is planned for 9 a.m.- 3 p.m., Monday, March 4. The Blood Drive is a collaborative effort between the Community Blood Bank and the Student Nurses Association.

The Art Department has announced that the Midwest Art History Society has invited Alice Knepper, Art, to present a paper at a conference slated for April 18-20 in Milwaukee, Wisc. The paper is titled "The Crayon" and Nineteenth Century Women in Art. It examines the character and role of the 19th century woman as seen in the art newspaper The Crayon: A Journal Devoted to the Graphic Arts and the Literature Related to Them.

Kelly B. Larson, Forensics, has recently been invited to become a member of the Editorial Advisory Board for Collegiate Press. He will be part of the board that evaluates and edits speech communication textbooks. Two professors are selected from the 4 regions of the country.

The Management Development Institute is offering computer software workshops at a 30% discount to MSSC employees. Karen Bradshaw, MDI, says the discounted price is $52 per person. A list of the computer workshops and additional spring 2002 workshop offerings were e-mailed to all employees several days ago. To register to attend a workshop, please call ext. 3128.
