2002 MSIPC Junior Division winner to perform
The Missouri Southern International Piano Competition will present Avan Yu, winner of the 2002 MSIPC Junior Division, in concert at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Feb 21 in Webster Hall Auditorium. The 15-year-old pianist will play selections by Beethoven, Chopin, Stravinsky and more. Tickets cost $10 for general admission and $5 for senior citizens and students and are available in the Billingsly Student Center Box office. Madrigal tickets on sale for March event Tickets are still available for a Madrigal feast and other courtly pleasures scheduled for 7 p.m., Wednesday, March 5, 6, 7 & 8 (Wednesday through Saturday night) in Taylor Performing Arts Center. The Taylor stage becomes the banquet hall of King Budward (A.D. 1549). The event is a benefit for the MSSC music department scholarship program. Cost is $20 and reservations may be made through March 1 by contacting the Billingsly Student Center Office, Room 102, (417) 625-9366, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. King Budward (Bud Clark, director of Choral Activities at MSSC) will reign over the evening with his Royal court. A court jester, jousting, dancing, juggling, magic, fun, laughter and singing by the Royal Chamber Choir of MSSC recreate a banquet atmosphere of the 16th century. The dinner portion of the program includes a menu of turkey legs, beef ribs, corn on the cob, potatoes, soup, fruit, cheese and pie.Assessment Day slated for February 19 Wednesday, Feb. 19 is Senior Assessment Day. Day classes will be dismissed to accommodate the testing session in which over 600 seniors will take the General Education Assessment Test. Some departments will also be administering their exit test to graduating seniors. "Missouri Southern is unique in its commitment to assessment by setting aside a day for this important event," says Delores Honey, Institutional Research and Assessment. "It sends a strong message to seniors that the institution takes assessment seriously and that faculty from their own discipline help administer the test. We literally could not do this without the help of the faculty." Dr. Julio León will address the seniors to explain why the tests are given and how they benefit seniors and the college. The information from these tests is reported back to the departments as group data for use in evaluating their programs and making improvements to their curriculum, processes and procedures. Students receive confidential reports of their individual results. Today's Brown Bag Kerry Johnson, Mathematics, will provide the presentation for today's Brown Bag Lunch. Kerry's topic will be Interactive Mathematics Online Using Academic Systems. The Brown Bag will be held from 12:10 p.m.-12:50 p.m. in Room 310 of the Billingsly Student Center (House of Lords Room). Faculty and staff are invited pick up a free lunch at the mini-buffet and enjoy a stimulating discussion. Lunch is provided by Academic Affairs and AmeriServe. Free to Be . . . You and Me February 22-23 Southern Theatre and the Show-Me Celebration Company will present the play Free to Be . . .You and Me at 2:30 p.m., Feb. 22-23 in Taylor Performing Arts Center. The play is directed and choreographed by Gerrie-Ellen Johnston, Theatre. The musical director is Susan Smith, Music. Free to Be . . . You and Me, from the book conceived by actress Marlo Thomas and friends, celebrates the joys of being whomever it is that makes you happy, regardless of your gender. Whether it's letting kids know that it's perfectly fine for boys to play with dolls or that Mommies can be almost anything they want to be, each joyous, funny messages challenges little ones to abandon stereotypes and embrace diversity. Free to Be You and Me features light, folksy and clever lyrics that will have many youngsters giggling and singing along.Missouri Constitution test dates slated Faculty members with advisees needing information on the Missouri Constitution Test this semester should know that Thursday, April 10 is the last day to sign up for the test in the office of the Dean of Arts and Sciences, Room 318 of Hearnes Hall. No sign ups by telephone or e-mail will be accepted. Students need to apply and pick up study materials in person. Office hours are 8-12 noon and 1-5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The examination will be held Tuesday, April 29 at 12:20 p.m. in WH-210. There is a $5 fee for taking this test that must be paid in advance to the Business Office in Hearnes Hall, Room 210. The student then presents his/her receipt for admission to the testing room. All out-of-state students who plan to graduate in May 2003, July 2003, or December 2003 who have not taken U.S. Government in a Missouri College (not high school) need to take this test. Only one test is given each semester. On Tuesday, April 15 at 12:20 in WH-210 a review session will be conducted by Michael Yates, Social Sciences, who will stress the significant areas of importance in the Constitution to aid the student in studying for the exam. No make up test is available. Therefore, it is extremely important that advisers notify transfer students of the test. Chili feed planned for late FebruaryThe Criminal Justice Student Association (CJSA) will host its annual Campuswide Chili Cook Off/Feed Wednesday, Feb. 26. The event will be held from 11 a.m.- 2 p.m. in room 125 of the Justice Center. There is no cost to enter and all entrants get to eat for free. The prizes for the contest will be $100 for 1st Place, $50 for 2nd Place and $35 for 3rd Place. To enter your chili in the cook off contact Mike Hulderman at ext. 9519 or hulderman-m@mssu.edu. If you are not interested in entering the contest but would like to eat many different styles of chili and the fixings, admission is $4 for all you can eat and a drink. Drawings will be held for great door prizes. Lantern Group operates as in house P.R. firm Under its new moniker, "The Lantern Group," the newly formed Public Relations Student Society of America chapter is operating as an in-house, student-run public relations firm. Its first client is Cheryl Dobson, financial aid counselor at Southern. There is no fee for on-campus services. The Lantern Group is coordinating promotional materials for the upcoming financial aid fair on Feb. 26. Craig Jones, junior mass communications major, is spearheading the effort, assisted by Jonathan Beville, junior mass communications major, and by Shaunda Walker, Kristi Lynn Hasler, and Bonnie Leiby, all mass communiations majors. Brenda Kilby, Communications, is the faculty adviser to the group. Rod Surber, Public Information, is the group's primary professional adviser.
Valentine's Day buffet today A special buffet for Valentine's Day will be held today, Friday, Feb. 14, during the lunch hour in the Diane Mayes Student Life Center. The price is $5 plus tax. Rhonda Campbell, AmeriServe, says the menu will include carved ham, grilled chicken breast, spaghetti with meatballs, scallion lo mein, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, corn, hot rolls, salads, and special cakes. Music for lovers on 88.7KXMS88.7KXMS/Fine Arts Radio International is featuring A "St. Valentine's Day Marathon" today. Jeffrey Skibbe, KXMS General Manager, says music lovers should go to http://www.mssu.edu/pages/kxms/february.htm#14 . He says KXMS will broadcast the Avan Yu concert live beginning at 7 p.m. next Friday, Feb. 21. "Show Me the Money" Financial Aid Fair Slated The financial aid fair, Show Me the Money, will take place from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26 on the second floor of Billingsly Student Center. The Financial Aid Office sponsors the event. Consumer Credit Counseling Workshops will be held at 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. in BSC, Room 311. The fair is open to current Missouri Southern students and area high school seniors. "Each year, money goes unclaimed or students fall victim to scams because students are uninformed," says Cheryl Dobson of the MSSC Financial Aid Office. "Those who attend can learn to avoid these mistakes. Best of all, this event is free and students may apply for programs at no cost." Dobson says representatives from the following agencies will be available to answer questions:
FACULTY/STAFF NOTES Carolyn Hale, Communications, has been asked to submit art work to the PBS Television Art Exhibit at the Joplin Museum Complex. The show will be held Feb. 28-March 15. Three pieces of Carolyn's art work in photography, two taken in Northern Ireland and one taken in Ireland, were accepted. A class in copyediting taught by Brenda Kilby, Communications, is judging entries for the 2003 Arkansas Press Women Communication Contest. The 19-member class has judged entries in feature writing, headline writing and other categories. Brenda is a former member of the Arkansas Press Association and a journalist who wrote news in Arkansas for more than a decade. This is the second time Missouri Southern has helped judge the contest, says Chad Stebbins, Institute of International Studies. The Arkansas Press Women organization is affiliated with the National Federation of Press Women.
