Langston Hughes birthday bash tonight
The Eleventh Annual Langston Hughes Celebration will feature Dr. Emily
Bernard, the editor of the highly acclaimed book, Remember Me to
Harlem. The program will take place at 7 p.m. this Friday, Feb. 7 in
Webster Hall Auditorium.
African-American poet/author Langston Hughes was born in Joplin
Feb. 1, 1902. Considered by many to number among the greatest American
poets of the 20th century, he is particularly admired for his innovative
use of blues and jazz rhythms in poetry to express his African American
cultural heritage. He also wrote novels, short stories, plays, opera
lyrics and books for children. Hughes was the central figure in the
Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s and was a powerful voice against racism.
Doris Walters, English, says Emily Bernard's address and
slide show is titled "Fabulous in Friendship". She says
Bernard's talk will focus on the Harlem Renaissance. Her book, Remember
Me to Harlem, records, through written correspondence, forty years
of friendship between writers Carl Van Vechten and Langston Hughes. An
art exhibit of work by Jane Kleindl, inspired by Hughes' poetry, will be
located outside the auditorium and on the stage. Readers from Emerson
Elementary, Memorial Middle School and Joplin High School will also take
part in the event.
Kufara, the marimba band, will start playing at 6:30 before the
event officially begins at 7 p.m. in Webster Hall Auditorium. The
program is free and open to the public Those wanting more information
should call Doris at (417) 625-9644.

Day classes will be dismissed to accommodate the testing session in which over 600 seniors will take the General Education Assessment Test. Some departments will also be administering their exit test to graduating seniors. "Missouri Southern is unique in its commitment to assessment by setting aside a day for this important event," says Delores Honey, Institutional Research and Assessment. "It sends a strong message to seniors that the institution takes assessment seriously and that faculty from their own discipline help administer the test. We literally could not do this without the help of the faculty." Dr. Julio León will address the seniors to explain why the tests are given and how they benefit seniors and the college. The information from these tests is reported back to the departments as group data for use in evaluating their programs and making improvements to their curriculum, processes and procedures. Students receive confidential reports of their individual results. Today's Brown Bag Pedro Talavera-Ibarra, Communications, will be the speaker for today's Brown Bag lunch. His topic will be Foreign Language Topic: Multimedia in the Foreign Language Classroom.
