Foundation Phonathon kickoff January 24

Kickoff for the 21st annual Missouri Southern Foundation Phonathon is slated for 1-4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24 in the Foundation House on the Missouri Southern campus. Area legislators, community leaders, friends of the college, and members of the news media will be present. The phonathon will run through at least April 15.

Three Missouri Southern alumni, Jack Parker, '43, Vicky Mieseler, '81 and Bill Gipson, '85, will serve as Co-Chairs for this year's event. Foundation Director, Curt Betebenner, says a combination of volunteers and student callers will seek pledges from thousands of alumni, students, parents and friends of the College. Others will assist by keeping records, mailing pledge cards and certificates and providing other services.

He says the primary goals for this year's effort are to increase alumni participation to 2,000 individual pledges and, secondly, to raise a total of $100,000 for the annual fund from our alumni, friends of MSSC, faculty and staff, and area businesses.

Southern Theatre to present Laramie Project

Southern Theatre will present The Laramie Project, a play by Moisés Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project, at 7:30 p.m., January 21-25, in the Bud Walton Theatre. The Laramie Project investigates the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard in Laramie Wyoming. Writers of the play visited Laramie seven times and conducted over two hundred interviews in putting together the play.

Moisés Kaufman says, "The idea for The Laramie Project originated in my desire to learn more about why Matthew Shepard was murdered, about what happened that night and about the town of Laramie. The idea of listening to the citizens talk really interested me. How is Laramie different from the rest of the country and how is it similar?"

Jay Fields directs the production of The Laramie Project at Missouri Southern,. General Admission is $3 for adults and $1 for senior citizens and high school students. The play deals with mature subject matter and is not recommended for children. Requests for accommodations related to a disability should be made at least 72 hours before the program to Terri Spencer at (417) 625-9393. Those wishing to make reservations should call (417) 625-3190.

Pedestrian safety project nearing completion

Students and other pedestrians soon will benefit from new traffic lights and crosswalk areas over both Newman and Duquesne Roads. The pedestrian safety project is nearing completion according to Bob Harrington, Physical Plant. He says primary access onto the campus for northbound traffic on Duquesne Road will be at the new traffic lights across Fred G. Hughes stadium. A pedestrian barrier has been erected on Duquesne Road that extends south to the Taylor Hall crosswalk The northernmost entrance to the Webster Hall parking lot (Lot 41) will provide entrance and exit to the left and right onto Duquesne.

"Students and other pedestrians will be able to cross at one of the clearly-marked interesections," Bob says. "The lights will have pedestrian cross buttons. Other than times when the buttons are used, the regularly-operating traffic signals will be coordinated with the lights at the intersection of Newman and Duquesne Roads".

Bob says the light should be fully operational by the end of January. He says the contract for the project stipulates completion no later than Feb. 20.
