Despite concerns over air travel, slowdowns due to increased security and potential restrictions on passports and visas, musicians from America as well as those from nations as far away as Mongolia have applied to take part the competition scheduled for April 22-27, 2002. "We are extremely pleased," says Mrs. Vivian León, Competition Director. As of earlier this week, 137 entrants from 27 nations had returned applications.

Dearth addressed by new scholarship

In many cultures it is not unusual for children to be taught by males in the earliest years of their formal education. However, male teachers at the lowest grade levels in the American system are rare. During the last decade, the number of men in classrooms dropped by over two percent according to a report released this month for the Missouri General Assembly. The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education prepared the report. Michael Horvath, Dean of the School of Education, has announced the first in what he hopes will be many scholarships to address this trend. A former Southern faculty member has provided the first of these scholarships in the name of a former MSSC student who became a teacher, Richard L. Prier of Wheaton. Richard Prier was a custodian for 10 years at a uniform factory in Granby before completing his bachelor's degree at Missouri Southern in 1978 at the age of 30. Then he went on to earn his master's degree from Pittsburg State University and later his doctorate from the University of Missouri. Moreover, he was attending Missouri Southern as a nontraditional student with a grant from the Missouri Bureau of the Blind. Missouri statistics show few students have an opportunity to experience a male teacher during the earliest years of their formal education. For information about the Richard Prier Scholarship, persons may contact Michael Horvath, School of Education, or Curt Betebenner, Foundation.
