Area students take part in English Field Day

Students from schools in the region participated in the 19th English Field Day sponsored by the English department Friday, Nov. 30. More than 1,200 tests were administered to determine both individual winners of competitions and sweepstakes winners from among the schools. Tests covered all areas of language arts, from mechanics and usage to spelling, vocabulary, reading comprehension and mythology. Tests were modeled after those those students will encounter later in the SAT and ACT for college entrance. The students also competed in college bowls of mythology and overall knowledge. The day also included a creative division for writers of poetry and fiction. George Greenlee, English, coordinator of the event, says preparations begin in January of each year, and involve the entire English department faculty and more than 50 students who help monitor and evaluate the tests.

Israeli film final semester offering in Foreign Film Series

Nick Kyle, Art, says tonight's offering will be the Israeli film Kadosh, directed by Amos Gitai, (1999, 117 minutes). According to Facets, "Gitai, Israel's gifted and most controversial director, turns his unblinking eye on the treatment of women in ultra-Orthodox Jewish communities. The story, set in the Mea Sherim quarter of Jerusalem, follows the struggles of two sisters to find personal happiness in a system that seems designed to marginalize their place in society and limit their possibilities for personal happiness."
