Final Brown Bag of the semester The last Brown Bag lunch of the semester will featureVickie Roettger, Biology, and David Locher, Social Sciences, speaking on Assessment. The presentation will be from 12:10-12:50 in Room 310 of the Billingsly Student Center. All faculty and staff are invited. Pick up your free lunch at the mini-buffet outside of BSC 310 and come inside to join your meal and presentation. Students housed in Residence Halls, Regents hear The Missouri Southern State College Board of Regents heard at its meeting yesterday that all students who were living in temporary housing now have moved to accommodations on campus. Terri Agee, Senior Vice President for Business Affairs, told the Regents that students have moved into the new residence hall and are no longer residing in motels. Chris Churchwell, accountant for Baird, Kurtz & Dobson in Joplin, delivered the report of the annual audit of the College. He said auditors issued a "clean opinion" of the college's finances. Paul Teverow, faculty liaison to the Board, said that the Student Senate now will have a representative at Faculty Senate meetings. Leigh Babbitt, sophomore History major from Kimberling City, will serve in that capacity. J. Larry Martin, Vice President for Academic Affairs, presented a lengthy list of proposals for course name changes, eliminations and new courses which werfe unanimously approved. MSSC President, Julio León, told Board members that revenue projections for the State of Missouri remain shakey and that some changes might have to be made by the state for withholding funds later in the year. "We will have to keep our fingers crossed," Dr. León said. "A lot depends on the national level of confidence that consumers have in the economy and other factors both domesticallly and internationally." All invited to Senior Honors Thesis presentations Seniors in the Honors Program undertake a research project in their major discipline and present the results to the college community in a series of talks called the Senior Honors Thesis. The theses may be the essence of good teaching and learning, as they constitute original research within the students' programs of study. Rachelé Lett, senior Elementary Education major from Joplin and Daniel Osborne, senior Elementary Education major from Webb City, will present The Evolution and Effectiveness of the Teacher at 4 p.m. today (Friday, Nov. 16) in Room 106, Taylor Hall 106. Jennifer Chase, senior Secondary Education major from Carl Junction, will be present Technology in the Classroom: A Look at the Placement of Southwest Missouri on the Continuum of Modern Standards at 3 p.m.,Wednesday, Nov.28 in Room 126, Taylor Hall. Everyone is invited to attend. Nine students group study abroad trips approved Nine student group study abroad trips involving 156 Missouri Southern State College students have been approved by the grants committee of the Institute of International Studies. The students selected for the trips will be awarded a total of $173,534 by the Institute. They include the following:
Greek film on tap for Contemporary Foreign Film Series Tonight, Friday, November 16, the Contemporary Foreigm Film Series fourth video feature of the year, Eternity and a Day (Greece, 1998, 130 min.) will be shown at 7 p.m., in Room 105, Webster Hall. Nick Kyle, Art, says the film won the Palme d'Or (Golden Palm) at Cannes. It is the story of a terminally ill writer, Alexandre, whose path intersects with that of a troubled, eight-year-old boy on "one special last idyllic day." Services held for retired faculty member Funeral services were held for longtime MSSC faculty member and professor emeritus, Dorothy A. Stone, Business, in Columbia, Mo. Nov. 11. Dr. Gail Renner wrote in his book, In Pursuit of Excellence: Missouri Southern State College, 1937-1992: "Dorothy A. Stone, who came to Joplin Junior College in 1939, was another of the illustrious instructors whose careers bridged the junior and senior college eras. Primarily a teacher of acccounting and secretarial courses, she was a pioneer figure in establishing the college's Business Administration curriculum." Dorothy Stone retired in 1975 and returned to Columbia where she had earned her bachelor's and master's degrees.Hughes to lecture, exhibit works at PSU Dewane Hughes, Art, will present a public lecture at 12 noon, Monday, Nov. 19 Room 103 of Porter Hall at Pittsburg State University. A reception will follow from 2:30 -4 p.m. An exhibit of artistic works by Dewane Hughes will be displayed in the Pittsburg State University Gallery in Porter Hall Nov. 19 - Dec. 12. Gallery hours are 8 a.m.- 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Hughes is known for his witty, charming, playful works. Structures and gizmos of every conceivable shape and form engage the art lover's desire to embrace the unimaginable. In 1996, Sculpture Magazine selected Dewane as one of the top 25 International Student Sculptors in the nation. FACULTY/STAFF NOTESVal Carlisle, Student Services, reminds the campus community that the Leonid meteor shower will flicker and flash above North America late Saturday, Nov. 17 through early Nov. 18. All you need to see it are your eyes, a dark location, and a little weather luck. The experts say the event should be the most spectacular show since 1966. Susan Craig, Project STAY, has been selected by Mid America Educational Opportunity Program Personnel to receive Emerging Leader Training. This is a year-long training session designed to not only improve leadership ability, but to impart information about issues relevant to federally-funded education programs. Only two people are chosen in all from MO, KS, and Nebraska. Kexi Liu, Music, was one of the adjudicators at the state competitions of Music Teachers National Association. The competitions were held last weekend at Missouri Music Teachers Association's 94th State Convention in Springfield. Dr. Liu adjudicated competitions in four categories: MTNA Junior High School String Competition, MTNA High School String Competition, MTNA Collegiate Artist String Competition, and MTNA Collegiate Artist Chamber Music Competition. The winners go on to the national competitions. A big thank you goes out to the Missouri Southern campus community from the 2001 United Way campaign committee. Melissa Locher, Learning Center says the effort exceeded its goal for this year, raising $16,370 for the United Way. We are truly a community who cares.Bill Stevens, School of Business Administration, served as one of the reviews, and was a discussant for a paper in the Social Issues/Diversity/Public Sector Track of The Southern Management Association Meeting, held in New Orleans, November 7-9. Heidi Fenske, Jonathan Wengert, Beau Swopes, Betsy Souza, Laura Hakkinen, Cary Poore, Debbie Crockett, Tasha Beaty , students in the Kinesiology Department, and Somer Quade, a student in the Teacher Education,recently participated in the "Body Walk" at Carterville elementary. MSSC students interacted with elementary students by reading to them and posing questions about the mouth, stomach, intestine, heart, lungs, muscles, bones, skin, and brain. The Body Walk, a unique project of the Missouri Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Health, travels throughout the state educating students about making healthy decisions.
