Picnic today on campus oval to celebrate Homecoming

An all-campus picnic will be held on the front campus from 10:45-1:30 p.m.today (Friday) featuring food, fun and announcement of Homecoming Royalty. his year's homecoming theme is Homecoming 2001: A Southern Odyssey. The picnic is free to students, faculty and staff with I.D. and $5 for the general public. In case of inclement weather, the picnic will be held in Young Gymnasium.

TheAll-Alumni Cocktail Party sponsored by MSSC School of Business and Alumni Association will begin at 6:30 p.m. tonight at the Joplin Ramada Inn.. There is no charge to attend the party. The party will be followed by a 7:30 p.m. Awards Dinner. Admission to the Dinner is $15 per person. Tomorrow (Saturday, Nov. 10) at 9:30 a.m. the Hall of Fame Brunch will be held in the Connor Ballroom on the third floor of the Billingsly Student Center. The cost to attend is $7.50. Contact Lee Pound, Alumni, at ext. 9355to RSVP for the Dinner and/or Brunch.

The Homecoming Parade will be held on campus tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. The week will culminate with the 2 p.m. gridiron contest against the University of Missouri-Rolla Miners.

Dennis Burns named 2001 "Outstanding Alumnus"

The Missouri Southern State College Alumni Association has named Contract Freighters executive, Dennis Burns, the 2001 Outstanding Alumnus. Born and raised in Trenton, N.J., Dennis Burns came to Joplin in 1988 by way of a baseball scholarship to MSSC. After graduating in 1991 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications, he began his involvement in community relations as an Account Executive with Saturn Communications. In 1995, Burns began his career at Contract Freighters, Inc. where he is currently Director of Sales. His responsibilities include customer retention and development along the US/Mexico border. He also maintains close relationships with Mexican Transportation companies who perform the border crossings and final delivery of customer's goods into Mexico. Dennis and his wife, Tracey, two daughters and reside in Joplin.

Lecturer Zubrin to chronicle case for Mars

Author and lecturer Robert Zubrin will present a lecture entitled The Case for Mars: Why We Must Settle the Red Planet at 7 p.m. in Webster Hall Auditorium. In his lecture, Zubrin explains in a step-by-step manner how present-day technology can be used to send humans to Mars within 10 years, how fuel and oxygen might be produced with Martian natural resources on the red planet and how bases and settlements might be built.. Robert Zubrin is a former senior engineer with Lockheed Martin and founder of Pioneer Astronautics, a space exploration research and development firm. His latest book, Entering Space: Creating a Space Faring Civilization was published in late 1999 by Penguin Putnam. Both CAB-sponsored lectures are free and open to the public.

Australian TV producer to speak on campus

Australian television producer/director, Gillian Arnold, will speak on the topic Achieving a Different Direction at 9 a.m., this Friday, Nov. 9 in Webster Hall Auditorium at Missouri Southern State College. The MSSC Institute of International Studies sponsors the presentation. Gillian Arnold has a wide-sweeping list of credits for her work in television in Australia and Singapore. She worked with Joanne Brough, Communications, then an executive producer for Falcon Crest and executive program supervisor for Dallas and The Waltons, to mention a few. Together, they worked to set up an English Drama Unit with the Television Corporation of Singapore. They developed drama from the ground up to create the first English-speaking drama in Asia

Honor Society Schedules Sale, Raffle

Sigma Tau Delta, the English Honor Society, will hold a fundraiser for the semester Nov. 12-13. A book sale will take place outside Hearnes Hall, weather permitting, the first day. On the second day the sale will be held in the 2nd Floor of the BSC from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Doris Walters, English, serves as the group's faculty sponsor. She says in addition to the book sale a previously-owned computer will be raffled off. Those taking part will also have the chance to win a first edition of The Great Gatsby (sans dustcover) and a copy of the latest book by Art Saltzman, English.

An evening of jazz classics on campus

The MSSC Jazz Ensemble and Southern Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of Phillip Wise, Music,will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 13 in Webster Hall Auditorium. Both bands are 19-member jazz bands grounded in traditional big band swing. The great music of the Count Basie Band, Duke Ellington Orchestra, and Woody Herman Herds constitute the basis of the literature. The Nov. 13 concert titled, An Evening of Jazz Classics, will feature classic jazz standards known to everyone. Saxophonist, Wesley J. Smith, will be featured on the Jerome Kern classic, "Yesterdays". "This concert is chock full of great classic jazz music and will be very entertaining," Phil says. "If you enjoy big band jazz you won't want to miss this concert." The Southern Jazz Orchestra concert is free and open to the public. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Godard film next in International Series

Masculin-Feminin, starring Jean-Pierre Leaud and Chantal Goya is the fifth program in the current series presented by the Missouri Southern Film Society. In this movie, Jean-Luc Godard explores adolescence, sexuality, violence, political protest and other problems that were cast into sharp profile in the 1960s. Revolving around the comatose romance between a volubly ineffective young radical (Leaud) and a blank faced ye-ye singer (Goya), the film freely mixes parody, politics, gags, interviews, trips to the movies and random violence, haphazardly subdivided into "15 precise actions" and punctuated by bursts of gunfire. Financial assistance for this project has been provided by the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency, and the MSSC Institute of International Studies. The film will be shown at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov 13 . in Matthews Hall Auditorium. Single admissions at the door are $1.50 for adults and $1 for senior citizens or students with I.D.

Crime Lab to to commemorate thirty years of service

The MSSC Regional Crime Laboratory provides a wide range of service to area police departments and prosecutors. The Crime Laboratory officially opened on Nov.14, 1971 with the dedication of the first phase of the Anderson Criminal Justice Center. The Laboratory will celebrate its 30th Anniversary on Wednesday, Nov. 14. A brief ceremony at will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday in Room 125 of the Criminal Justice building. Tours will be offered from 2:30-4:30 p.m. College personnel and the public are invited accroding to Philip Whittle, Crime Lab Director.

Study Abroad Fair next Wednesday

In celebration of International Education Week, the second annual Study Abroad Fair will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14 in the Keystone Room of the BSC. Chad Stebbins, International Studies, says displays and exhibits featuring all of Missouri Southern's study abroad programs will be presented. This includes the ten Student Group Study Abroad trips approved by the Grants Committee of the Institute of International Studies, the International Student Exchange Program, and the college's bilateral agreements with partner universities across the world. Refreshments will be available, and drawings will be held every hour for door prizes. International Education Week provides an opportunity to promote and celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. Secretary of State Colin Powell has endorsed the week, citing the importance of international education in promoting tolerance and in building friendship between the United States and future world leaders.

Extra help for students with reading problems

Do you have students who are struggling to get their reading done? Eileen Godsey, Learning Center, says the Center is offering Speed Reading during the Spring 2002 Semester. Each class meets five weeks and is one credit hour.

Handel's Messiah off calendar for this year

The annual presentation of Handel's Messiah, originally scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 11 at Missouri Southern, has been cancelled. Although the "live" presentation of the Messiah will not be offered this season, local residents can enjoy selections from Handel's time-honored work during the week before Christmas on MSSC's radio station, 88.7/KXMS Fine Arts Radio International. Selections from the work are scheduled on the following dates/times:

  • Tuesday, Dec. 18, 11 a.m.
  • Wednesday, Dec. 19, 1 p.m.
  • Thursday, Dec. 20, 9 a.m.
  • Friday, Dec. 21, 3 p.m.
Internet listeners can access 88.7/KXMS Fine Arts Radio International at the address KXMS.ORG. The station is a service of the Communications Department at Missouri Southern State College.

Pioneer Broadcaster interview on three TV stations

An upcoming edition of Newsmakers features an interview with Richard W. Massa, professor emeritus and the 2001 recipient of the Pioneer Broadcaster Award. He reflects upon his career at Missouri Southern, particularly in the development of television and radio and will share stories about MSTV's formative years. He will also discuss the role of students in station programming and operations and talk about his involvement in the establishment of KOZJ-TV. The program will air at:

  • 5:30 a.m.. Saturday, Dec. 8 on KOAM-TV;
  • 8 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 12 on KGCS-TV; and at
  • 7 p.m., Friday, Dec. 21 on KOZJ-TV.
Judy Stiles, Communications, hosts Newsmakers. KGCS airs on Joplin/Webb City cable channel 7 and on UHF channel 57.

FACULTY/STAFF NOTES

The Joplin Branch of the NAACP held its Annual Freedom Fund Banquet On Saturday, Nov. 3. Al Cade, School of Education, served as the Master of Ceremonies for the event which was held for the first time at Missouri Southern. The student organization Southern IMPACT also participated in the ceremony and received an honorarium from the association.

V.A. Christensen, Art, says a survey course on African art wll be offered next semester. It will deal with the different geographic areas on the continent of Africa including Egypt, Sub-Saharan, and Equatorial. He says the class will cover diverse cultures including Islamic and Traditional. The ancient kingdoms, as well as the colonial and contemporary periods will be investigated.. The Art Department will waive the perquisite 21 credit hours in art for persons from other disciplines interested in the topic. Potential students contact ext. 9631 for more information.

As the leaves were falling Halloween night, McCormick Hall was full of excitement with 500 parents and children taking part in the Safe Halloween event according to Anne Ingram, Resident Director. The Residence Hall Association (RHA) thanks everyone who participated and looks forward to next year!

The English Department is offering the Writing Placement Exam at 2 p.m., Wednesday Nov. 14 in Room 209, Hearnes Hall. Please let any of your students, who have not taken a composition class, know about this testing date. Results will be available the next day. The 7th Annual MSSC "Got Health?" Fair was a great success, reports Sheri Beeler, Womens Athletics. A large number attended the fair on Oct. 30 in the third floor of the Billingsly Student Center. There were many information booths on health-related topics, door prizes, health screenings and even health "goody bags" distributed. Thanks to everyone who attended.
