Insurance enrollment deadline is today! Debbie Dutch Kelly, Human Resources, says to those who like to use every possible moment for projects: the deadline for turning in forms is no later than 5 p.m.TODAY, Friday, Nov. 2. the Human Resources Office is in Hearnes Hall, Room 214. Those missing the deadline will be assigned "Employee Only" medical coverage and "Employee Only" Vision Plan A. If you have dependents who miss out, they can obtain coverage through our COBRA plan by paying the full premium (without the benefit of the $275 in Missouri Southern benefit dollars). They can next enroll during the fall of 2002 for Jan.-Dec., 2003 coverage. So don't delay. Debbie says the H.R. staff appreciates everyone's assistance in making their selections from the choices for 2002. Homecoming 2001: A Southern Odyssey Nov. 5-10 is Homecoming week at Southern! This year's theme is Homecoming 2001: A Southern Odyssey. A wide variety of events are planned for campus and community. A week from today, on Friday Nov. 9, an all-campus picnic will be held on the front campus from 10:45-1:30 p.m. featuring food, fun and announcement of Homecoming Royalty. The Homecoming Parade will be held on campus Saturday at 11:30 a.m. The week will culminate with the 2 p.m. gridiron contest against the University of Missouri-Rolla Miners.Homecoming Royalty finalists selected Ten candidates have been selected as Homecoming 2001 Royalty Finalists. Queen finalists include: Brianna N. Bolt, Junior Biology major, Kingston, Jamaica (Koinonia); LaShawn Brewster, Senior Speech Comm major, St. Louis (RHA); Keisha Smith, Senior Kinesiology major, Joplin (Alpha Sigma Alpha ); Sara Williams, sophomore Criminal Justice major, Marionville, Mo.( CJSA);and Sylvia Wofford, Senior Marketing Management. Joplin (Delta Epsilon Chi). King Finalists include: John Knight, Junior Accounting major, Carrytown, Mo. (Koinonia); John Magoffin, Senior Biology/German Educ. major, Butler, Mo. (RHA); Tramarick Smitherman, Senior Criminal Justice major, Lubbock, Tex. (Southern Impact); Jeremy Sturgell, Senior Biology/Chemistry major, Liberal, Mo. (SAA); Bob Wilson, Senior Elementary Education major, Tahlequah, Okla. (CAB). Royalty will be announced during the all-campus picnic on Friday, Nov. 9 and all 24 candidates will participate in the Homecoming Parade on Saturday, Nov. 10. Three special dates for your homecoming calendar The All-Alumni Cocktail Party sponsored by MSSC School of Business and Alumni Association will begin at 6:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 9 at the Joplin Ramada Inn.. There is no charge to attend the party. The party will be followed by a 7:30 p.m. Awards Dinner. Admission to the Dinner is $15 per person. On Saturday at 9:30 a.m. the Hall of Fame Brunch will be held in the Connor Ballroom on the third floor of the Billingsly Student Center. The cost to attend is $7.50. Those wanting to attend either the Awards Dinner or the Hall of Fame Brunch should call Lee Pound, Alumni at ext. 9355 to make reservations.Today's Brown Bag Enjoy free lunch and an informative presentation at today's Brown Bag open to faculty and staff. Conrad Gubera, Social Sciences, will speak on Japanese Education at 12:10 on the third floor of the Billingsly Student Center. Just come at noon, obtain your meal in the buffet line and prepare for a pleasant and informative noon hour. The Brown Bag will conclude at 12:50, in time for faculty to make 1 p.m. classes. The Brown Bags are sponsored by Academic Affairs and AmeriServe. Program focuses on healthcare in Japan The Nursing Honor Society will present a special program titled The Japanese Healthcare Experience from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., today, Friday, Nov. 2, in Mills Anderson Auditorium of the Criminal Justice Center. Presenters are Dr. S. Fletcher and Ms. D. Barnhart, faculty from Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Indiana. The presentation is being provided as part of activities surrounding "The Japan Semester." Admission is free. A $15 fee will be assessed for those wishing to receive continuing education credit. For more information, contact the Nursing Dept. at MSSC at ext. 9322. Celebrate Spanish style The Spanish Club is sponsoring a dinner and dance to celebrate the Day of the Dead. The event will be held on Friday the 2nd at Joplin Memorial Hall. The Spanish-style dinner will be from 7-8pm, and the dance will finish out the evening. The price is $8 for both the dinner and the dance, and if you only want to attend the dance the cost is only $3. If you'd like tickets or additional information, contact the BSC Box Office at 9366 or stop by Billingsly room 112 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Tickets also will be available at the door. Tsubaki to discuss Japanese theatre, martial artsAndrew T. Tsubaki, Professor Emeritus of theatre and film at the University of Kansas, presents The Living Tradition of Japan Today Through Theatre Forms and Martial Arts at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6 in Webster Hall Auditorium. Tsubaki will don traditional Japanese kimono and hakama to demonstrate movements and dances of the Japanese traditional theatre, Noh, Kyogen and Kabuki. He also includes some martial arts movements known as Aikido particularly Iaido, a sword-drawing ritual. Cash Awards available to students through competition The Art League at Missouri Southern State College will present Southern Showcase, a juried exhibition with cash awards available to Missouri Southern students. The juror for the exhibition will be sculptor and MSSC alumnus, Mac Hornecker. All Missouri Southern students are able to take part. Those wanting to enter should bring artwork to the Spiva Art Gallery in the Art Building on the MSSC campus between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. between Friday, Nov. 5 and Friday, Nov. 9. An entry fee of $2 per piece is required. A special opening reception in the Spiva Gallery will be heldat 5 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 12. The show runs through Nov. 30. "Hall of Honor" topic of Newsmakers The Mall's "Hall of Honor" at the Northpark Mall displays photographs of area veterans and helps tell the story of how these men and women served their country in a time of need. An upcoming edition of Newsmakers on KGCS-TV takes a look at this local effort to honor veterans. The wall honors veterans from World War I to the present. Those included in the discussion will be Karen Hildebrand and Dewayne Patton, representing the Northpark Mall, and Dan Chiodo and Billie Bull, speaking on behalf of The Joplin Globe. The program will air at 8 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 7 on KGCS-TV. It will air again at 5:30 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 10 on KOAM-TV and again at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 7 on KOZJ Public Television. KGCS airs on Joplin/Webb City cable channel 7 and UHF channel 57. Class on Microsoft Excel slated by MDI The Management Development Institute at Missouri Southern State College has scheduled a variety of classes for upcoming weeks. The next class coming upo is Intermediate Microsoft Excel, slated for 8:45 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 3 in Room 303, Matthews Hall. This workshop is a continuation of the Introduction to Excel class. More advanced topics include naming ranges and multiple page reports. Discover techniques for designing spreadsheets to minimize errors, make changes easily, and increase the utility of your spreadsheet. Other topics include spreadsheet layout, constructing formulas, linking spreadsheets, and using database features of Excel. Learn how to create powerful graphic presentations, including bar graphs, pie charts, exploded pies, XY graphs, line graphs, scatter plots, and three-dimensional graphs.For more information contact the Management Development Institute (417) 625-3148Law Enforcement Academy day classes begin in JanuaryMissouri Southern's 600-Hour State Certified Basic Law Enforcement Academy will begin day classes as of Jan. 14, 2002, according to Wayne Thomason, Academy Director. Upon successful completion of the Academy, eligible students will be certified by the Missouri Department of Public Safety as Peace Officers in the state of Missouri. The Day Academy will be offered Jan.14 through May 16. Those taking part receive training in Missouri criminal statutes, constitutional law, criminal investigation, patrol techniques, defense tactics training, physical training, firearms training and other skills and abilities deemed necessary by the state for Missouri law enforcement officers. Safety and Security Department goes high tech! Safety and Security package is now included in the College's www.mssu.edu website. Students, parents, faculty/staff, etc., can access this site to find out about services offered by this department. They can read the mission statement to determine the purpose for Safety and Security on campus. Visitors can learn how to protect themselves by reading the section on "date rape drugs" and the Substance Abuse Policy. They can even check out the crime stats for MSSC for the past three years. There is a final section highlighting links to related sites. Ken Kennedy, Security, Rod Surber, Public Information, and Jessica Head, student Web assistant in the Public Information Office, collaborated on the project.FACULTY/STAFF NOTESA trio recital featuring the music of music of Haydn, von Weber, Damage is slated for 3 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 4 in Webster Hall Auditorium. Those taking part include Joyce C. Elliott, flute, William C. Elliott, Music, cello and Steve Edmund, piano.On Oct. 12, David Richards, Social Sciences, gave a talk and paper, "The Civilizational Geography of Government Respect for Human Rights, 1981-1999" at the "Global Human Rights and Diversity: Area Expressions" symposium sponsored by the Ford Foundation and the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. Sigma Tau Delta (the English Honor Society) will hold a fundraiser for the semester Nov. 12-13. A book sale will take place outside Hearnes Hall, weather permitting, the first day. On the second day the sale will be held in the 2nd Floor of the BSC from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Doris Walters, English, serves as the group's faculty sponsor. Scott Wells, Biology, says the Environmental Health program, within the Biology Department, has received a $5,000 grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in cooperation with the Association of Environmental Health Academic Programs. Mike Fletcher, Director of the Environmental Health program, says this grant is for the enhancement of environmental health program recruiting strategies and is renewable for two additional years.
