Take a culinary trip around the world

You'll have the chance to take a culinary trip around the world at the International Food Feast, scheduled for 5:30-7:30 p.m. tonight in the Lion's Den on the second floor of the Billingsly Student Center. The MSSC International Club sponsors the Food Feast as a fundraiser. International cuisine is prepared by international students and by local foreign exchange students and international families. Seating at the Food Feast is offered with advance tickets only. Tickets are $9 for the public and $6 for students and are available at the BSC Ticket Office. Tickets will NOT be sold at the door. Southern Theatre to present Romantic Comedy

Southern Theatre will present Bernard Slade's Romantic Comedy, at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 17-20 in Taylor Performing Arts Center. Directed by Alex Pinkston, Theatre, Romantic Comedy takes playgoers on a trip to the '60s and '70s with a lighthearted confection that sets an individual's needs for love, friendship and theatrical success against the backdrop of America's social revolution. Members of the cast include
  • Stephanie Belt, senior Theatre major from Joplin;
  • Stephanie Christman, senior Theatre major from Joplin,
  • Jason Engstrom, junior Theatre major from Seattle, Wash.;
  • Jennica Sorensen, freshman Vocal Music major from Tulsa, Okla.;
  • Kris Stoker, senior Theatre major from Pierce City; and
  • Rachel Weisensee, freshman Theatre major from Joplin.
Admission to Romantic Comedy will be $3 per adult and $1 for senior (over 60) citizens and students. The play is rated [M] for mature audiences. Those wanting to make reservations should contact the Southern Theatre Box Office at (417) 625-3190.

MSSC website now linked to worldwide news

The Missouri Southern News Bureau website now offers an additional service to Web browsers that connects readers to global network of news. In addition to reading the latest news releases from Missouri Southern, visitors can access national and international news! Simply go to the college website and select "Breaking News" at the top of the startup page. Rod Surber, Public Information, says college items are linked to the worldwide news stories. He says the site updates automatically each time the Missouri Southern site is visited.

Ozark Mayor Annie BaxterAward recipient

Donna McQuay, mayor of Ozark, Mo., was presented the Annie Baxter Award in a luncheon ceremony held Wednesday, Oct. 10 in the Billingsly Student Center/.McQuay began her life in public service in 1986 when she founded and published The Union Labor Reporter. "We try to look at dedication to service when we select the recipient of this award. Her work deserves to be recognized," commented Tom Simpson, Political Science. Annie Baxter, elected Jasper County Clerk in 1890, was the first woman elected to a countywide public office in Missouri. The award was developed by the Social Sciences and is made possible by the Helen S. Boylan Foundation. The Empire District Electric Company underwrites the annual award luncheon.

Il Bidone next offering in International Film Series

The revealing drama, Il Bidone, starring Broderick Crawford, Richard Basehart and Giuletta Masina, is the third program in the current 40th Annual International Film Festival. Il Bidone is the story of a fun-loving, but rather unscrupulous trio (Crawford, Basehart and Franco Fabrizi) who engage in a distasteful "bunko" game to provide their worldly needs. The Missouri Arts Council, a state agency, and the Institute of International Studies have provided financial assistance for this project. The film will be shown on Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 7:30 p.m. in Matthews Hall Auditorium on the MSSC campus. Season tickets for the remaining seven programs are on sale at $10 for adults and $7 for senior citizens or students. Single admissions at the door are $1.50 for adults and $1 for senior citizens or students.

Today, Wednesday remain for free cholesterol screenings

The Wellness office will be offering FREE cholesterol screens to all faculty and staff over the next several weeks. This is a non-fasting, fingerstick screen that will tell you within 5-7 minutes your total cholesterol and HDL (good cholesterol).

Oyler to present Making of a Samurai Tuesday morning

The image of the samurai warrior is one that summons thoughts of traditional Japan in all its colorful and, at times, fiery splendor. But who were the samurais? When did they live and how does today's image size up with historic reality? Dr. Elizabeth Oyler, Assistant Professor of Japanese Language and Literature at Washington University in St. Louis will will present The Making of the Samurai: From Wild Warriors to the Way of the Warrior at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16 in Webster Hall Auditorium. The representation of the samurai, where honor is paramount and shame the worst disgrace, is an important model for interpretation of Japanese culture. Dr.Oyler, in her presentation, will explore how the samurai historically came to dominate characterizations of Japanese masculinity by tracing the development of the warrior class from medieval times through the modern periods in Japan. The Making of the Samurai, is free and open to the public.

Free German class for area youth

A free German Class organized by the International Language Resource Centerwill be held on Wednesdays from 4-5 p.m. in the Storytelling Room at the Joplin Public Library. It will run from Oct 17.-Dec. 5. The class is open to children ages 8-13. The instructor is Austrian native, Vanessa Lewis. To attend the class interested persons just need to come to the library and bring a writing instrument and paper/notebook.. No pre-registration is required. Branson bus trip

The charter bus for a special trip to Branson will leave from the main parking lot just west of Webster Hall at 11 a.m., Sunday, Oct. 28. A low price of $65 includes:
  • Trip by charter bus to Branson;
  • Lunch at Hemingway's at Bass Pro in Springfield;
  • Tickets to the Branson All-American Entertainment Awards Show;
  • Admission to Branson USA Theater Dinner;
  • Dinner at Branson USA Restaurant
Several of the "Outstanding Performers in Branson" will perform and some will be inducted into Branson Entertainment Hall of Fame. Space on the bus trip is extremely limited! Italian Film plays tonight in Webster Hall

The Italian film, Malena, will be presented at 7:30 p.m. tonight, Friday, Oct.12, in Room 105, Webster Hall. The starting time, one-half hour later than usual, will allow movie-goers to attend International Food Feast in Billingsly Student Center from 5:30 - 7:30 before enjoying the latest film from the director of Cinema Paradiso, Giuseppe Tornatore. Facets says that Malena "casts beautiful Monica Bellucci as a war widow resented by her neighbors in her small coastal village because of her allure," who is "unfairly labeled as a woman of loose morals. An adolescent boy, who has made her the object of his fantasies, comes to realize her virtue as World War II and the rise of Fascism leads to more conflict within the community."

Video Workshop for faculty

All faculty are invited to the Video Workshop from 2:30-3:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 11 in Webster Hall, Room 129. Bryan Lawler, Lifelong Learning, says the workshop is for introductory and veteran televised teachers. The workshop should also be beneficial for those who are planning to integrate CD augmentation. Criminal Justice Open House

Criminal Justice Administration faculty invites counselors and their students to a Criminal Justice/pre-Law Open House at the Mills Anderson Justice Center from 10 a.m. through the noon, Wednesday, Oct. 17. The event will include a "careerfest" featuring Criminal Justice employers, tours of the MSSC firing range and computerized shooting system and a Q & A session with Criminal Justice faculty. James F. Brown, Learning Center, published "In Search of INFJ" in the Fall 2001 issue of the Bulletin of Psychological Type.

Student Josie Davidson,treasurer for the Missouri Southern Coalition Against Child Abuse (CACA), says the group sponsored the sale of flags for children who were victims of the New York tragedy. Over $270 was raised on the project. This money was sent to the Twin Towers Orphan Fund for the orphans of the New York Tragedy. The Twin Towers Orphan Fund is a charitable trust fund designed to benefit those children who were orphaned in the national disasters of Sept. 11. These are the children of those who lost their lives in the explosions and collapses of the several buildings in the World Trade Center, at the Pentagon and among the passengers and crews aboard the four hijacked airliners. CACA also will have a float in the Maple Leaf parade on Oct. 20. J.J. Spurlin, Criminal Justice, serves as academic sponsor for the group.

David Smith and Mark Comstock, Business, presented a paper entitled "The Academic Portfolio as a Balanced Scorecard," at the 4th International Quality Management and Organizational Development Conference. The conference was held at Linkoping University in Linkoping, Sweden, Sept. 12-14. Beverly Block, Business, co-authored the paper.

Art Saltzman, English, was one of 10 winners in the 2001 Writer's Digest Personal Essay Contest. Out of 2800 submissions, his entry, "A Few Paces from Hemingway," took third prize, which consists of a cash award and a cache of books.

The Student Council for Exception Children (SCEC) will begins selling home interior candles on Tuesday, Oct. 16. Candles vary in price from $5.99 to $14.99. Those interested in ordering should contact Gloria Faine at ext. 4476.
