Shadows on campus this morningToday marks the first Upward Bound Student Shadowing Day of the year. Susan Craig, Upward Bound, says 20 students from Joplin High School will be on campus from 8 a.m.to noon. Each participant will be paired with an MSSC student and will attend classes, activities, etc. with the student.Today's Brown BagToday's Brown Bag Lunch features Tatiana Karmanova, Communications, speaking on life in Russia. The presentation will be from 12:10-12:50 p.m. in the House of Lords Room in the Billingsly Student Center. Pick up your free lunch at the mini-buffet outside of BSC 310. The free lunches are a courtesy of Academic Affairs and AmeriServe Food Management Services. All faculty/staff are invited Flute Recital Tuesday eveningMary Lu Brandwin will present a Japanese flute recital at 7:30 p.m, Tuesday, Oct. 9 in Webster Hall Auditorium. The recital is free and open to the public.Phi Delta Kappa presents Deanna WinnDeanna D. Winn, Interim Assistant Provost and professor of Elementary Education at Utah State University, will present Everyone is a Leader, from 6-7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 9, in Room 314 of the BSC. A reception will follow the presentation, sponsored by Phi Delta Kappa. Al Cade, School of Education, says Winn has taught in public schools for twelve years, focusing on Instructional leadership and supervision.. She has particular interest in promoting improved teaching through improving support for teachers and has written opn action research, peer coaching, revisiting the teacher evaluation system and time management in schools. Those wanting more information should call Al Cade at ext. 4426.Important benefit meetings slated for Oct 9-10All faculty and staff employees eligible for insurance benefits received recent notice of upcoming benefit information meetings. Please read the notice and plan to attend one of the four sessions scheduled for 1:30-3 p.m. and 3:30-5 p.m., Tuesday, October 9 and 8:30-10 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.-noon, Wednesday, October 10. Meetings will be at Matthews Hall Auditorium. Everyone who is eligible for benefits must re-enroll by noon Friday, November 2, 2001 for coverage in 2002So it is very important that you get all the information you need. Several vendors and Nancy Sublette, the Executive Director of the MSU Benefits Group, will be at the Tuesday meetings to answer questions and provide information.Listed below some of the main improvements MSSC is making to your benefit program. Four States Regional College FairA virtual mobile library full of higher education choices will arrive Wednesday, Oct. 10. That's when approximately 70 colleges, universities and technical schools will be represented at the fourth Four States Regional College Fair from 5-7 p.m. at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center at Missouri Southern. Admission is free. Derek Skaggs, Admissions, says public and private colleges and universities from Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Iowa will be among those represented.Four dates remain for free cholesterol screeningsIn an effort to increase awareness about cholesterol and a healthy heart, the Wellness office will be offering FREE cholesterol screens to all faculty and staff over the next several weeks. This is a non-fasting, fingerstick screen that will tell you within 5-7 minutes your total cholesterol and HDL (good cholesterol). She says those wanting to donate should leave outdated directories in Room 211, Spiva Library, or call Leanna at ext. 9335.Rescheduled Annie Baxter Luncheon slated for WednesdayThe invitation-only Annie Baxter Luncheon will be held at 12 noon, Wednesday, Oct. 10 in Room 310 of the Billingsly Student Center. The luncheon will include the announcement of the 2001 winner of the Annie Baxter Award which recognizes the outstanding contributions of a woman in government/public service. The event was postponed after the World Trade Center/Pentagon attacks on Sept. 11.October 11 is National Depression Screening DayIf you have students whom you feel may benefit from a screening, please refer them to an on-site screening for depression at the Campus Health Center from 10 a.m. -noon, Thursday, Oct. 11. Private, free screenings for depression, eating disorders, or alcohol abuse/dependence are available on-line for all MSSC students, faculty and staff. Either visit http://www.mentalhealthscreening.org/screening/ and then type in Southern's personal passcode, HELPINGHAND or click on the link on the Student Support Center's homepage. For information, contact counselor Dalenette Voigt-Catlin at ext. 9542.Influenza shots later this monthThe Health Center will provide flu shot clinics again this year. The times and dates will be as follows: 1-3 p.m., Monday Oct 29; 8:30 a.m-3:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 30; and 8:30 a.m.-12 noon. Wednesday, Oct 31. Appointments can be made for after Nov. 1 for those who cannot take part in October. The shots will be given on a first come, first served basis. The price will be $15 for faculty and staff.with health insurance and $5 for students.. If you have any questions, please call Melanie at ext. 9323.FACULTY/STAFF NOTESMSSC National Champion LD Debate squad is heading to the Suffolk University tournament held in Boston, MA, Oct. 26-29, according to Kelly Larson, Communications. Objects and Empathy, the latest book by Art Saltzman, English, was published earlier this year, to good reviews. Dale Simpson, English, says the book, the seventh written by Art, is a collection of essays on a variety of subjects. Time is of the Essence, by Patricia Murphy, English, also has just been published. It is a critical study of the treatment of time and, particularly, gender in Victorian literature. Lost Items
