Efforts to help tragedy victims, workersSeveral organizations on campus are making efforts to help the victims of the World Trade Center tragedy, as well as relief workers at the site of the disasters in New York City and Washington, D.C. Val Carlisle, Student Services, says the Ecolonomics Program and Residence Halls Association, have placed Red Cross canisters at various campus locations for cash collections. The Education Executive Cancel is selling red, white and blue ribbons. Proceeds will go to the United Way's September 11th Fund. The Middle School Education program is taking part in a T-shirt and sock campaign. Members have placed boxes around campus for collections. T-shirts and socks will be sent to New York and Washington via Salvation Army transport, tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 22.Values Forum to discuss World Trade Center AttackA Values Forum has been scheduled for 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27 in BSC 310 (House of Lords Room). The topic will be: What Is the Appropriate U.S. Response to the Recent Attack on the World Trade Center? Richard LaNear, School of Business, and Steven Wagner, historian of U.S. Foreign Policy, and possibly others will offer some introductory remarks, and then the floor will be open for general discussion. David Richards, History, will moderate.Regent named to judgeship by Missouri GovernorGov. Bob Holden has named Jane Wyman of Alba to a newly created position as Jasper County Associate Circuit Court judge. Wyman is currently an attorney in the Spradling Wyman L.L.C. law firm in Carthage. From 1998 to 2000 she served as assistant county counselor for Jasper County, and was city attorney for Alba from 1993 to 1997. Wyman received her bachelor's degree from Missouri Southern and earned her law degree from the University of Tulsa. She has served as a member of the Missouri Southern Board of Regents since her appointment to the post by Gov. Mel Carnahan in 1997. Jasper is one of seven Missouri counties that grew dramatically from 1990 to 2000, qualifying those counties for an additional Associate Circuit judge to help with increased caseloadsToday's Brown Bag LunchDate: Friday, Sept. 21 Gockel Symposium speakers on TVThe three speakers from this Wednesday's Gockel Symposium will be featured guests on an upcoming edition of Newsmakers, hosted by Judy Stiles, Communications. The show will feature Mark Tilton, Purdue University;William Tsutsui, University of Kansas; and William Farrell, head of Dynamic Strategies of Asia. The program will air at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10 on KGCS-TV (Joplin/Webb City cable channel 7 or UHF channel 57). Japan Semester presentation next Thursday"Degrees of Cultural Accuracy in Memoirs of a Geisha," the next Japan Semester presentation, will take place at 11 a.m. next Thursday, Sept. 27 in Webster Hall. Maggie Childs, Associate Professor of East Asian Culture at the University of Kansas, will analyze Geisha and other contemporary fiction by American writer Arthur Golden. Two of the prints are of international destinations and the other is a large black-and-white photo of the cast of Earl Hammner's The Waltons. The oil painting is a colorful, abstract depiction of galloping horses. We welcome these new employees to the Missouri Southern staff.FACULTY/STAFF NOTESRho Sigma, the MSSC Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, has been selected again to receive the Achieving Chapter Excellence Award (ACE). The award is based on outstanding contributions in four areas: service, chapter programming, professional growth and development of the membership, and activities with other chapters and educational organizations. The presentation will be made to Counselor Kaye Abight, Teacher Education and outgoing and incoming chapter presidents, Wendy Phipps, and Tracy Howard, at the 43nd Convocation, Nov. 8-10 in Orlando, Florida. Only 21 chapters where chosen for this honor from the more than 530 active chapters in the society. Rho Sigma Chapter contributes funds each year toward two patron scholarships, the national Kappa Delta Pi foundation, and the Child Development Center on campus. The membership is active in many service efforts, participates each year in the MSSC Phonathon, and supports local schools through their Reading is Fundamental Program.The records of the local chapter of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), which date back to the early 1920s, will transfer to the Missouri Southern Archives in a ceremony at 10 a.m. tomorrow, Sept. 22, in the Seattle Roast Cafe at the Spiva Library according to Jean Campbell, Communications, local AAUW president..
