Mrs. Snodgrass holds both bachelors and masters degrees in Piano Performance from Pittsburg State University, and, over the course of her teaching career, her piano students have ranged in age from 5 to 87 years. Coming to MSSU in 1994 as an adjunct professor, Debra taught Class Piano, Music Appreciation, and accompanied many students as they performed their Senior Recitals. As Assistant Professor since 2007, she now teaches the music methods courses for students majoring in both Elementary Education and Music Education. Mrs. Snodgrass also enjoys being the faculty sponsor for MSSU’s collegiate chapter of NAfME, the National Association for Music Educators. She continues to accompany and collaborate for faculty and student performances. As a former Miss America, Debra (Barnes) has performed in forty-one states and three foreign countries, on network television, numerous cable stations, and still maintains an active performance schedule. Mrs. Snodgrass was a recent winner of the Wadill Chamber Music Competition and the Concerto and Aria Competition, both held at Pittsburg State University in March of 2007. Debra’s recent performances include Chopin’s Concerto No. 2 in F minor with the Southeast Kansas Symphony in April 2008, two solo recitals in Louisville, KY, and solo piano recitals at Missouri Southern in 2007, 2010, 2011 and 2012. As a part of her most recent solo piano recital in 2012, the second Debra Snodgrass Endowed Piano Scholarship was presented to a worthy young piano student. Honored as the “Woman of Distinction” in 1999 by the Joplin, Missouri chapter of Soroptimist International, Mrs. Snodgrass was also chosen as the “Woman of Achievement” by the Business and Professional Women of Carthage, Missouri.
