Visual Art Degree

About the Degree:


With this degree in hand, you’ll have the opportunity to pursue either an advanced art degree or launch your career as a self-employed fine artist. A foundation in a variety of studio practices and art history on the university campus can also allow students to add a minor in another field as needed for several art-related career paths. These minors include marketing, business, modern language, literature, philosophy, chemistry, psychology or theatre.

As a graduate of Missouri Southern's visual art program, you will harness your creativity into a life-long career. Picture yourself in one of these positions:

  • Use your creative eye as a photographer, working in photojournalism or taking portraits.
  • Work for newspapers or publishers creating captivating illustrations.
  • Be your own boss by using your refined artisan skills to start your own business selling your art.
  • Use your knowledge of artistic elements and art history to work in an art gallery as a curator or leading tours.
  • If you have an especially keen artistic vision, become a creative director for a company or publication.

What You’ll Learn:


  • Students will describe the process, form and content of a presented body of work from foundation classes using art and design language specific to his/her major. 
  • Graduating student will present a cohesive body of advanced work appropriate to his/her major. 
  • Student will be able to communicate in writing about his/her personal work within the social, artistic, historical context and articulate meaning of said work.  
  • Students will identify acclaimed contemporary and historical artists, designers, and works as sources of inspiration for his/her own work. 
  • Students will be skilled at presenting themselves and their material professionally to obtain employment. 
  • Students will be able to advertise/promote his/her work and exhibitions.
