Missouri Southern's television station is proud to serve the University and the Joplin region with a digital broadcast signal.  Over-the-air programming may be seen on Digital UHF channel 22.  KGCS-TV is one of the few University-operated over-the-air television stations in Missouri.  A strong background of community service and educational opportunities help form the framework for a transition to the communications world of tomorrow.

History of Missouri Southern Television

Missouri Southern established a television station in 1984, as a service of the Department of Communication.  The station initially operated as a cable channel on the Joplin cable television system. Programming included regular coverage of Joplin City Council meetings, and numerous programs presented by students, faculty and staff of the University.

In January of 1988, the University began over-the-air broadcast television programming on a low-power television station, K57DR-TV. The call letters were changed in 1995 to KGCS-LP.

In September 2008, KGCS moved to channel 22, and began broadcasting a digital signal.  The changes allow KGCS to reach viewers in Southwest Missouri, Southeast Kansas and Northeast Oklahoma, with the potential to reach around 168,000 households.
