International
Opportunities
The mission of Missouri Southern
State University includes an emphasis on international
education. Included in these goals is to have graduates
who understand how cultures and societies around the
world are formed, sustained, and evolve. The Biology
Department at Missouri Southern offers various opportunities
for students to gain perspectives on other cultures
either in the classroom or through travel. Below is
a list that highlights some of the possibilities.
- Each summer the Biology Department teaches Bio 101
– General Biology on the campus of Instituo
Tecnologico de Costa Rica in Cartago, Costa Rica.
This one month course is taught by instructors from
Missouri Southern. They utilize the facilities of
the local university for classroom and lab. Imagine
studying the rain forest in the morning and hiking
through it in the afternoon! For more information
about this program contact: Dr.
Dorothy Bay.
- Missouri Southern students have the chance to study
for a semester in other countries. The college is
a member of the International Student Exchange Program
(ISEP), through which MSSU students can study and
earn credit at more than 100 colleges and universities
in 33 countries around the world. This past year,
the department had majors study in Australia and in
France.
- The Bilateral Exchange Program provides agreements
with international institutions that are specific
to the degree major. The Biology Department has offered
exchanges in environmental health with universities
in Costa Rica and Mexico.
- Bio 353 – Biomes is a course that studies
selected ecosystems. The interactions between plants
and animals with their environment are studied in
the classroom and then followed with a field trip
to the actual location of the ecosystem. Some of the
selected sites for study have included Costa Rica
and Belize.
- EH 352 – International Environmental Health
is an in-depth study of environmental health issues
in other countries. The environmental health issues
of selected countries are studied and followed with
an extended trip to the country.
- Internship and Independent Study options in other
countries are almost endless. Our majors have completed
internships in locations as diverse as Belize, Kenya
and Papua, New Guinea.
- Study Abroad Grants. Many of the travel opportunities
discussed above can be partially funded through study
abroad grants provides through the Institute of International
Studies at Missouri Southern.
